If you are a mountain bike enthusiast you will find your dreamland on Elba. The Capoliveri Bike Park is a real natural gym in the fantastic scenery of Mount Calamita, just 5 km from the Residence La Valdana.

The Bike Park consists of 5 permanent routes of varying difficulty and length. It develops for more than 100 km of spectacular and interchangeable paths and roads. Each route is identified by a color and indicated by appropriate signs indicating the name of the route and the direction to follow.

The Bike Park offers opportunities for all bikers: from flat routes in absolute safety for novice cyclists and children, to real “legendary” challenges for more experienced cyclists and spectacular descents for adrenaline lovers.

You can reach the Bike Park with your own bikes or rent them at the Rent Elba Bike, right at the bottom of the Bike Park, where you can find all kinds of bikes (including e-bikes) and all the sizes (for children and teenagers). More info:  www.rentelbabike.it/

The beaches near our residence

Elba has more than 100 beaches with the most varied characteristics. We list some of the most characteristic and easily reachable from our Residence.

The Felciaio beach, 1 km from the Residence la Valdana, is a corner of paradise, ideal for those who love the sea and are looking for a day of relaxation and tranquillity.

The beach can only be reached by foot through a 300-meter path that connects it to the large parking area (€ 8/day) which is always free of charge for guests of Residence La Valdana.

The environment is completely natural and uncontaminated, out of the chaos. The beach has an extension of about 150 meters and in the first few meters near the shore the water is low and the seabed is sandy, therefore perfect for those with small children to keep under control. On the side of the cliff and a few meters away from the shore the water has a depth of just over 2 meters which also allows to jump from the cliffs.

The water is very clear and clean and you can practice snorkeling and admire the marine life, that is very rich and prosperous especially near the cliffs. The underwater landscape is breathtaking and enchants everyone with plenty of colors.

The beach is free, bathing establishments or rentals are absent but a small bar is available where you can find snacks and ready-made dishes tobe enjoyed in front of a wonderful panoramaon the Capo di Stella promontory, Mount Calamita and in the distance the island of Montecristo.

Lido Beach: 1,2 km away. Length 400 m with sand bottom, where you can find all the beach facilities, as well as restaurants, bars, and the possibility of doing many water sports. Free parking for our guests 200 meters from the beach.

Norsi Beach: 2,5 km away. Length 400 m, sheltered beach, half way between the comforts of a bathing establishment and a some what original beach. Parking, bar, sun beds and umbrellas rental.

Naregno beach: 5 km away. Length 500 m and sandy bottom. It has bathing establishments, restaurants, bars, parking lots and activities related to the sea.

Barabarca Beach: 6 km away. 150 m long sand and pebble beach. There is a small bar on the beach where you can also hire sun beds and umbrellas. Parking, bar, sun beds and umbrellas rental.

Zuccale Beach: sandy beach next to Barabarca Beach, 120 metres long. Parking, bar, sun beds and umbrellas rental.

Lacona Beach: 5 km away. 1.160 metres long it is Elba’s longest sandy beach. Here you can find every type of facility and as well as car parks.

Laconella Beach 8 km away. Length 150 m with sand bottom. Beside the beach of Lacona is a very beautiful and not crowded beach in an uncontaminated and very suggestive natural environment.

Reale Beach: 7.5 km away. Length 120 m with pebble and sand bottom. It is really worth the trip to the nearby Laghetto di Terranera lake, a magical place for mineral enthusiasts, reachable in 10 minutes by an easy path. Parking, bar, sun beds and umbrellas rental.

Capo Bianco Beach 10 km away. Length 260 m with pebble bottom. It is one of the most famous and loved beaches for its suggestive beauty, given by its characteristic backdrop of white pebbles that makes the water crystal clear. A 5 minute walk takes you to the PadulellaBeach which has the same characteristics. Parking, bar, sun beds and umbrellas rental.

The village of Capoliveri
Capoliveri is shaped like a ship with its prow facing the sea, and is in a strategic position at the top of a hill; on one side it looks on to the Gulf of Porto Azzurro, on the other to the Stella Gulf, and you can see Monte Capanne in the distance.

The entire town sits strategically at the top of a ridge because it was founded during the Etruscan-Roman period as a fortress, from where both the western and the southern sea areas could be easily watched over; from some of the higher parts of the town, the northern areas, and even Portoferraio – that the Romans called Fabricia – could also be easily watched over.

During the Latin age, Capoliveri had various names: Capitis Ilvae, Caput Liberum, Caput Liseri and Liveri; due to the great financial importance both of the iron mines and the trade, the Rasenna – as the Etruscans called themselves – extended over their confederation’s frontier, and this makes the town today without a doubt one of the most historically interesting areas on the island as regards Etruscan presence.

The main square – Piazza Matteotti – is a characteristic viewpoint of the roof tops, and is surrounded by a very lively atmosphere, thanks to also the numerous bars, restaurants and small handicrafts shops. It is a very popular meeting place both for tourists and locals.

Three of Capoliveri’s most important celebrations are:

– the traditional “Festa dell’Innamorata” (Festival of the Betrothed) that takes place every 14th of July, when a procession of people dressed in Medieval costumes starts off from the town and goes down to Innamorata beach.

– The Magnetic Opera Festival. In July you can witness some of the best works in the world in a fabulous setting: the open-cast mine of Ginevro.

– the famous “Festa dell’Uva” (Grape Festival), when all four districts of Capoliveri compete with each other across the whole town; each district has set up stands for the occasion based on a theme of their choice.

The village of Porto Azzurro
Commune of 3100 inhabitants, 15 km from Portoferraio, Porto Azzurro stands in a sheltered cove of the Gulf of Mola, and has been a natural port for the Tirrenian Sea routes since ancient times.

It is the modern name for Portolongone, a sea town at the foot of a promontory with the Longone, or San Giacomo, Fortress at the top, built by Phillip II of Spain in 1563; the building is star shaped and in some way reminds you of the Antwerp castle.

The Saracens raided Portolongone for centuries, then it was ruled by the French, the Spaniards and by the Germans, and fought for by the great European powers until 1802; that same year it became part of the French territory. In the beginning of the 16th century, it was the Spaniards, who, following the advice of the Genoese admiral Andrea Doria, decided to build a fortification on the eastern side of the gulf in order to close the bay.

The small town center is very beautiful with its narrow uphill roads, stone houses, enchanting corners and squares, and the large, lively square that reflects on the sea in the harbour.
